Communication and Culture

I find myself communicating differently with different groups and cultures without even realizing it. When I was in undergraduate school, I roomed with a girl who was a different ethnicity than I.  One day I invited her to a friend’s dorm room.  As we entered the room I began to talk with my girlfriends and we just talked like we talk.  When we left the dorm, my friend was amazed at the language that we spoke.  She said that at times she could not understand what we were saying.  It was kind of funny because I did not realize that I changed that much.
With different groups of people I may talk more professional and with others I am more laid back.  When I am talking to close friends, I may use slang and words just that group of friends understands.  I think probably everybody changes the way they talk with different groups, but I don’t know, maybe not.

  1. Gloria,
I can identify with your comment about changing your language when around friends versus colleagues or in a professional environment. I also agree that at times we all may use slang when around friends versus other groups of people without recognition.

  2. Hi Gloria,
I agree with you too that we may communicate differently with different groups of people without even realizing it. I loved the example you shared with us of your experience, I think it shows that we may not even be aware of how we change but others who know us in a different context may be surprised at our different communication styles when we are in another situation with them.
