The one thing that surprised me most as far as the similarities and differences of the communication evaluation was the fact that I scored myself as significant in the area of verbal aggression and others scored me as moderate. I thought by the answers I gave myself, I would be considered aggressive. However, some of the ways that I responded caused me to be scored as aggressive significant.
One thing that I learned is that I am probably more aggressive in certain situations than others. Sometimes I feel like I have to teach my children to be aggressive verbally in order to defend themselves because of the area we live in. I know that sounds horrible, however I do try to teach them to be respectful of others.
The other thing I learned about communication this week was that we sure do assume a lot. It was amazing to read during this week’s discussion board and how we all were forced to make an assumption about someone we could only see a picture. Though it made me uncomfortable to do on paper and in front of others, I am sure that I do this unconsciously. This is something that I need to work on and I have already began the journey.
It is very interesting to see how others view us compared to how we view ourselves. I think you make a valid point. I also feel that it is important to model to our children to use their voice and stick up for their own values and beliefs. Sometimes it is necessary to be aggressive.
ReplyDeleteGloria,
ReplyDeleteI thought that this week's discussion was also very interesting. I think we all unconsciously judge others based on their outward appearance before we even get to know them. During the evaluations on this week it was interesting to learn how other's viewed me versus how I viewed myself.
