Imagine this

In my imaginary world I have had the opportunity to take part in several research projects that address learning gaps amongst children.  These findings have suggested that there is a large learning gap between low income families and high income families.    Research findings has also discovered that there are different experiences that children are being exposed to at home and at school in these homes where the children end up on the positive side of the learning gap.
As I have discovered these different experiences, I will implement a research project that follows a select group of children that are low income school and are on the negative side of the gap, along with a group of children that are high income who are on the positive side of the gap.  With the agreed participation of the parents, researchers will begin to implement strategies and experiences in the homes as well at school through the 4th grade of the lower income families.  There will be strategies to measure if with the implementations have areas such as language by the age of two been affected and has the gaps been lessened and many of the 2yr old children in the low income families will have as many words as children from a high income family.
I imagine that through this study that the learning gaps will be affected and families will begin to learn ways even though they may be experiencing poverty that their children do not have to be behind in school.  I imagine that learning gaps can be lessened and eventually for many families demolished.

  1. Gloria,

I have been interested in the achievement gap for years. I agree that socioeconomics plays a large part in the gap, but I also feel that race, gender and perhaps family background also contribute. I also feel that it would be more beneficial to carry on the study farther than the first 4 years, because we would have a better understanding of how the students are performing academically.

    Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for an interesting blog. I agree with Jennifer. I think we do need to carry the study longer than four years because it would help to see the growth or decline over a longer period of time thereby giving you a better understanding.
