In the case of a catastrophe and I had to move with my immediate family to a culture of people that were totally different from my own, there are three things that I would take. I would take my bible because it is a book that we hold as sacred in our family and we try to allow the principles in it to guide us in our daily living. The next thing I would take would be a photo album of my family, though I may not be with them in person, I could look at them. I would probably bring a copy of the family tree that we have, this would be a memorandum in writing of whom we are and where we came from.
If when I arrived I was told that I had to give up two things and only keep one. The two I would give up would be my photo album and my family tree. I could never forget the faces of my loved one and probably try to draw pictures of them to share with others. My family tree I could probably re-write on something else and make up stories to memorize. I would keep the bible because it has stories of hope in it and is also used for spiritual guidance and insights. I am sure I would need this in a new situation such as this.
This exercise really made me think about what is important to me. The first thing I really thought of was my phone being a thing that I could take, because all these things could already be saved in my phone. However I was not sure how accessible the internet or electricity would be.
I believe a lot of us chose our bibles and our family pictures. I learned a lot about myself and the things that are important to me. My husband often laughs at my OCD in putting everything important on my external drive, but it really does hold everything dear to me, except for actual people.
