United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cutural Organization

The United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have a wide variety of ways and areas in which it supports countries.  Its mission statement is to support early childhood policy and education systems that encompass both the well-being and holistic development of the child.
The way in which this mission statement is accomplished seems to be well thought out.  One of the ways in which the mission has been met is through strengthening education systems by providing access, quality, investment and governance of early childhood systems.  Other areas in education focused on are higher education, inclusive education, HIV & AIDS education, Language in Education and Science and Technology.  Because UNESCO encompasses both the well-being and holistic development of the child, it has also devoted time to natural science, social and human science and communication.
One of the things that I found interesting in this website was in a section that was titled access; it spoke of in the declaration in1990 of Jomtien for Education for all stating that learning begins at birth.  Though in 2000 this statement aided in making early childhood a top priority, it would have been interesting of what the effects would have been if the thought of learning begins before birth would have been embraced.
Another interesting topic followed in this website was investing in early childhood in 3rd world countries and or very poor countries.  It has been a challenge to mobilize funds for these countries and funding from the government is very small.  Therefore the UNESCO uses the strategy of assisting countries in approaching private-sector in funding early childhood projects.  This is an idea that might have to happen in the United States

  1. Hi Gloria,
Your information on UNESCO was really interesting, thanks for sharing! I was particularly interested in the information that you shared on how UNESCO helps invest in early childhood in developing countries. Having the private sector help fund early childhood projects sounds like it could be a great way to help programs get the funding and resources that they need. I wonder what this would look like if the US used more funding like this. It would be interesting to learn more about how UNESCO does this and see if it's something that could be done here!
