Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.

Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.   (We just needed freedom and time)

We had lots of kids in our neighborhood when I was growing up and we always found things to do.  The essential items for play for me as a child were time, space and sometimes friends to play with. I remember there always being child organized neighborhood games, sometimes playing in the street and sometimes in the field.  We had lots of children in our family so my parents made sure we had time to play outside.

I did however love playing with dolls; this is how I learned how to braid hair.

I loved playing two or four square and my kids love playing this game as well. They always come home and tell me about playing four square.
My children still play in some ways like I did, but times have for sure changed.  When I was a 7 yr old child I was allowed to walk to the store down the street alone and get snacks for the fort we were making at home.  I would never allow my children to walk to the store alone these days.    Children also play with technology a lot now days.  The other day my son and his cousin that lives in another state played chess while on Skype.  It was amazing to observe them showing each other dance moves through Skype, wow have things changed.
As I child I loved to play and there was just time and the freedom to do it.  Now that I am an adult I have to schedule time to play.  Play makes me feel happy and rejuvenated.  I have got to make more time to play.

  1. I love that your child was playing chess on skype. I think it is cool how children can interact with each other while still using technology. My three year old calls my sister all the time on video chat. Also, I love four square. I taught my kids at school how to play red rover the other day. I was surprised how much they liked it.
